At the Mangorei School Pets Day children are invited to bring along smaller animals. Dogs can negotiate an obstacle course and lambs and calves are judged. There are traditional flower displays, vege creations and cake baking, minature scenes and soap carving. Senior classes run their own stalls and activities. Room 7 made and sold Toffee Apples this year and ran a Bowling Game on the cricket wicket. The Fun Races were held the following week as we ran out of time on Pets Day 2011.

Library Trip
Today, the 6th of October, our class went to Puke Ariki library to learn about the library and how to navigate around and use it properly. We were lead around by Sarah, a staff member at Puke Ariki. Firstly Sarah read us a story about the 3 little pigs. The illustrator was very clever at not colouring in the pigs, because he runs out of red to make pink for the pigs skin. The fire, when the wolf goes down the chimney, didn't work because the fire didn't have any red. After that, we had a test to see how many sections were in the bottom of the library, there were 19, and most people got about half. We were not allowed to walk around, just look around from where we were sitting. Then we walked around a bit to look at the books and issue some that we wanted. Oh, we could bring our own library cards. After, we left. It was a fun trip, and we could go back in term 4. Hopefully we get to get more time.

Road Sealing
On the 23rd of September Nick, Simon and I were watching the road sealing outside our school. The first step was to paint the area with tar and the road worker only had a hose. Then they had to cover the road with stones getting rolled out of a truck over two times. They started further down the road and sprayed tar out of a truck this time. The tar was so hot at 170 degrees celsius they covered the tar over with stones down the road and it got rolled over with roller. It was a cool experience and i was supprised about how hot the tar was but it was probably nesisery for it to set.
On the 23rd of September after lunch a tar truck came down the road and started spraying tar which was 170c and then one more truck came along and stones were falling out of the back of the other truck so thats that.

RANFURLY SHIELD
On Thursday the 22nd of September the Ranfurly Shield came to Mangorei School. Every class got called up by the runners to get their photo taken with the Shield as well as a close up look at the Shield. Did you know the Shield was also designed as a trophy for Soccer, not rugby. This was because the picture in the middle was a soccer ball. The picture was changed by adding goal posts on the soccer goal that made the picture look like a rugby scene. The Ranfurly Shield also known as the Log o’ Wood was first played for in 1904. In 1901 the Governor of New Zealand , the Earl of Ranfurly said that we would present a cup to the rugby union when it actually turned out to be a shield.

Heart Dissections
On Friday in Room 7 the class were able to dissect some sheep hearts. We had to bring a sharp knife to do the dissecting with. Mr McA told us what to look out for. They were the veins, pipes and chambers .It looked like most people were having a good time, sticking their fingers through pipes and cutting the hearts, it was so much fun for pretty much every one! Here is a slide show showing what Room 7 did.

Visiting New Zealand
Hallo! Mein Name ist Marie-Luca
Hello! My name is Marie-Luca. I come from Germany. I live in Cologne and I came here to visit my family in
New Plymouth. It is very different to Cologne, because in Germany there is an extreme weather change and here in New Zealand there's not.
My school in Germany is way bigger than Mangorei school in New Plymouth, here it is more pretty because there is more vegetation and in Germany there is boring concrete ground and there are not as much trees as here at Mangorei. But also the people here are more open to things than in Germany, for example here you can just say" Okay, We'll come at noon. ", and thats sorted!
In Germany you have to agree on a time first.
That's why I like New Zealand so much!
Deswegen mag ich Neuseeland so gerne!

Competition Success
During the term, Superclubsplus ran a drawing competition that students could enter online.
Competitors had to download a sketch that had been started by Australian Author / Illustrator Terry Denton, then complete the artwork by adding in their own sketches in order to compliment the story.
Logan entered this competition and gained a top five placing. Quite an achievement.!!
Below you can see the completed work that Logan entered and also a photo of the book, Bumper Book of Silly Stuff to Do, he was sent as a prize.
Terry Denton drew the bottom part of the sketch, the fish on a bike chasing the running cartoon cat. Logan drew the rest !!! Could you tell the difference ?

MANGOREI WASPS NEST
‘BZZZZ’ said the one last wasp that lived after the elimination.
Today we, that is Johanna, Rose, Monte and Simon were lucky enough to watch Mr. Allan dig up a wasps nest which the wasps had already been killed the week before so it was all safe for us to dig up.
So the dig began, a quarter way of digging it up we found a toothbrush, at that point we didn’t know how important it would be later through the task.
The entrance of the nest was about the size of our fists.
We followed the entrance and paused so Johanna could take heaps of pictures from different angles and at each one of us looking into the hole making interested faces!
Mr. Allan put the spade down once more, we heard a big CRACK.
Then we saw it ‘GOLD’ we all thought getting ready to jump and grab it,but no,it was the amazing fortress of hexagons! WOW!
“We need to clean it” said Mr. Allan “ We won’t be able to transport it with all the dirt on it.”
“The toothbrush!” We shouted
Rose got it from underneath the pile of rubbish.
Simon and Monte started cleaning it carefully, Rose and I stood watching and taking photos of the nest it was surprisingly and a nice golden colour.
Once it was clean (or as clean as a wasps nest can get) Mr.Allan picked up the shovel and tried to lift up the wasps nest and put it in a big plastic box.
We carried it into room 7 to let our class mates to take a good look at the nest.
Under many oooohhhh’s and aaaaahhhh’s we put it on the mat, there were also many eeeeewwww’s when they saw the dead larvae lying still on the bottom of the box.
“ I wonder how a wasp can make such perfect hexagons.” Mr. McA
wondered.

Logans Kiwi Encounter
I went out on a special occasion to Lake Rotokare wildlife reserve after school to release a little kiwi named Regal. He was picked up as an egg in the bush by the manager Simon and Nick the vet from the kiwi trust. Sue the kiwi release guide from the kiwi trust helped put a transmitter on little Regals leg with a lady from Rotorua who drove all the way down to deliver Regal to the reserve. Once the transmitter was on Regals leg we hiked out into the bush to go release Regal. So we hiked for 20 to 30 minutes then we found a home for Regal that was under a big tree with lots of roots and holes. Then we had to get some ferns to keep him warm .Then we got to pat Regal and get photos with him. After this we let him go and walked back to the cars, said lots of thank yous to the helpers, then we drove home back to New Plymouth....Logan.

Beach Education Student Comment
THIS POST IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Room 7 students were asked to write opinions on their Beach Education experience for 2011. They answered four different questions. Here is a selection of their responses after they were each asked to publish one of their answers on our Class Blog.
QUESTION 1:
Explain what you think about the amount of time spent on each activity at Beach Education.
I think we should have more time in the water, and a bit less in the building, because I think that surf life saving is more in water than in a building.....James
I think it was a reasonable amount of time on each activity except, more time on the beach.....Steven
I think we spent too much time sitting down because some of the kids were starting to get restless. They could have got to the point quicker rather than making it drawn out.....Nathan
I think we spend to much time on land than in the water its called beach Ed so we should spend more time in the water.....CalebS
I think we need more time out on the beach than inside, because we were talking and watching video's for most of the day.How about we do more things outside because we already know the things we're doing inside so it's a waste of time, and it's boring.....Angie
QUESTION 2:
In what way do you think that the activities at Beach Education could be improved for greater learning ?
I think the time on each activity was kind of unfair, because I thought we would have a longer time swimming. How about next time we do more swimming activities because we have already learn't about rips etc.....Lauren
I think they should tell us more about how to recognise a rip because it could easily happen that someone gets caught in one and gets washed out to sea like me.How about they show us in the tower or on the beach how to recognise a rip so when you're alone on the beach that you can see where you can swim and where not.....Johanna
I think that for each year that we go to Beach Ed don't tell us the same thing all everytime because it gets a bit boring so how about telling us newer things like what you learnt while being a lifesaver.....Paige
QUESTION 3:
What do you think was the most valuable learning you got at Beach Education and why ?
I think that learning to recognise RIPS in the surf and looking for some from the Surf Club Tower was a very powerful learning experience.....Mr McA
I think the rip so we now where the rips are so we dont get one andthe frist aid so if some one get in trouble.....max
I thought that in the medical room was the most valuable learning because I learn't things that I didn't know before.....Jake
QUESTION 4:
How do you feel about having Beach Education every second year while you are a student at Mangorei School.
I think it is good but its gets quite boring because its always the same. How about every second year they do different activities every second year so its fun every second year?.....Tiana
I think they should have it every 3rd year because every 2nd year is to much.
How about they do it every 3rd year?.....Nicole
I think that it is little to much because we do the same things every time , how about we do it every second year but change the activities?.....Maya
I think it's not very good because you learn the same thing over and over 4 times and by the time you get to year 8 your not listening at all. How about we have it every 3 years.....Portia
I think it's not very good because you learn the same thing over and over 4 times and by the time you get to year 8 your not listening at all. How about we have it every 3 years.....Portia
